Who Are We
Appalachian Miles for Smiles came to life with a considerate prayer on a Sunday after Frank Waldo encountered a weeping woman who could not receive the free dental work due to shortage of volunteering staff.
Waldo prayed for an opportunity where more patients could be cared for, and within two weeks, that opportunity arose.
He presented his idea for Appalachian Miles for Smiles, a stand-alone operation that could open its doors within minutes of arriving at a location. The dental unit would be equipped with top-of-the-line dental instruments and licensed dental professionals. Mr. Waldo’s idea was approved, and doors opened in April 2016.
Followed by free vision services in 2017.
Our Why
What We Do
Appalachian Miles for Smiles provides dental and vision care at NO Cost to the patient through our 5 operatory mobile units in East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia. We offer 24-26 events each year throughout the region.
When we are not traveling we offer dental hygiene 4 days a week (Tues-Fri), dental 3 days a week (Wed-Fri) and dispensing of the prescription glasses (TBA).
We are committed to providing patients with all of our services and support at no charge. Our standard of service combines high-quality healthcare with compassion and cooperation from our supporters, partners, and licensed providers.
We devote our lives to see a true change in our community and world. It is only with prayer, kindness, dedication, and teamwork that we can prosper.

Since starting Appalachian Miles for Smiles in April of 2016, over 18,000 people have received free dental and vision care and other services.
AMFS has provided over $8 Million in dental and vision services to date.
